Yay for roots! I do have a few that come out higher. This is a sign of a healthy plant.

Yep that's a root. a spike looks like a little green mitten poking out of the crown.

btw.... Love the name. Is that a "Made of Honor" reference? I hope so... that was really funny.

Roots are good! Another clue that would have told you that it was not a spike is it's location. Phals never have 2 spikes from the exact same spot (I might be wrong, but have yet to see an example proving otherwise). Each leaf base will only have 1 spike. So normally your next spike will be coming from the leaf above it, on the other side.
