Well I am now certain that as long as you give you orchids a little water and food when they need it and then simply leave them alone, they amaze you with all sorts of new growth!!!
So I finally decided to start watering my two larger orchids (Dend. Norma Jackson x Dend. Pink Sunshine and a really large, long leafed NOID Phal.) by letting them soak in water for about ten minutes once a week. Well the turn around in both these plant's health has been amazing. The Dendro was having leaves turn yellow and drop off and the Phals long dark green (this one always has very dark green leaves no matter how much sun it gets) were drooping down and getting very floppy. (normally a sign of too much water) The Phal is still in bloom, but it was dropping pedals like crazy.
Well I am glad to report that both plants are returning to their former glory! The Dendro's leaves have stopped turning yellow. Two of them I think it will keep. They have stopped curling up and are flattening out again and turning the correct shade of green. On top of all of that, I was ignoring it so much that I totally missed the new cane it was sending up!
The Phal has some new growth too. The new leaf I knew it was working on suddenly had a huge growth spurt and now it's gotten really big in a short amount of time. No where near a long as the older ones yet, but it'll get there soon enough at this rate. The older leaves are all now perked back up and are holding themselves up nicely. Not one of them is floppy anymore. I'm thinking this Phal., like my Phal. stuartiana (species) likes to be a bit wetter.
And when I was watering it today I noticed it also has a new, big, fatty root growing out the side! By the way, It is still in bloom with no new pedals falling off anymore. This guy has been in bloom for 4 months now with no signs of it stopping.
Other new growth to report is on my Onc. Carnival Costume. It has three stalks with one in bloom, one getting ready to bloom and one that is recently had it's last bloom fall off. What is amazing is that on that old stalk, at the bottom it is sending up what seems like a new flower bud. It's big and fat like the other buds getting ready to open on the other stalk. This one stalk was the first one to be in bloom and now it's producing more flowers on it?
It is also sending out side shoots on the old stalk a litter higher up with what look like new little buds on them. Is that possible? It also has a new P-bulb and leaves starting up!
Maybe I'm doing some things right.
Thanks only to all of the great people here on OB!
