Growing mounted orchids in house?

Does anyone have luck growing mounted orchids inside? I grow most of mine under fluorescent lights and in s/h but I'd like to mount a few and see how they do. Any tips you have for indoor mounted orchids would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am currently experimenting with a mounted orchid in the house. I had it mounted on a piece of driftwood with some sphag. I saw a fungus gnat last week (which I freaked out on) and remounted to a rock with no moss. It is sitting in a humidity tray in my dinning room East window. Today, I noticed a new root so this might just work.

Most of the orchids I grow on the intermediate to warm side are grown mounted in different areas of the house.

Pay attention to the temperature in the room as well as the humidity. Proper air circulation is important as well. You can use a small fan to make sure the air doesn't stagnate or if your house doesn't have good air circulation. Be careful not to place orchids near air conditioning vents. If they're near windows, you might want to leave the windows open a bit so air gets in.

Some orchids need a significant drop in temperature at night in order to bloom. This might be difficult to accommodate in the house as well.

I've had many of these plants for a little over a year now.

I have a few small mounted orchids in the house - I treat them the same as potted except for more frequent watering

Why wouldn't mounted orchids be able to grow inside?? I grow all my mounted orchids inside. At this time of year they get dunked every morning, and then get a quick misting late afternoon, since most are bone dry by then. They are no different to grow inside than potted orchids, other than the fact that they dry out faster. Having a good level of humidity helps as well, so you're not constantly watering them.

OD course they CAN be Barb. The issue is whether you're willing to do the work to keep them well-watered that way.

I have three mounted orchids growing in my home (in Las Vegas! little ambient humidity) - Dendrobium rigidum, Dendrobium linguiforme and Sophronitis cernua. I was a little concerned about the last as it is not as succulent, but they are all doing very well. They hang by a south window with Low-E glass.

I grow about 20 or so mounted orchids which hang in the back of grow shelf under compact fluorescent light in my bedroom. It is definitely doable. If humidity is a worry, you could always get a humidifier (I have one.) But really the main thing is they need a different watering schedule as others have alluded to. About half of my mounted orchids I water every morning, and the other half get watered every other morning. Someone mentioned air circulation...air circulation is good for potted orchids too! A small fan would be a good addition to any growing set up.

Hi Barb,
I have grown mounted plants inside. For me, the key was ensuring enough water, so I had them hanging in an old fish tank. I would put water in the bottom for evaporative purposes and spray them, frequently. Good luck!

I agree! I used to get things on mounts, but they just dried out too fast...I gave up on them and put them back in pots, and they are doing much better. I don't have time to water every morning; it just doesn't work with my schedule...
