Epigeneium amplum questions. Male
Default Epigeneium amplum questions.

Hello all. Recently purchased a beautiful mounted Epigeneium amplum seedling from Olympic Orchids (who I recommend highly - really wonderful, strange assortment of seedlings for super super cheap).

Anyway - I was curious as to overall experiences others have had w/the Epigeneium amplum - especially in reference to median size - curious as to how big this fellow will become. I've read that they're pretty rare in cultivation, so I'm hoping somebody else has had their hands on some.

Thanks in advance for any & all responses!

-Ry.

All I can put up for advice is a caution about keeping their roots healthy. Epigeneiums in general don't put out a lot of roots. And only new pseudobulbs are the ones that grow them.

Default Epigeneium amplum culture

Hi Ry,

Bulbs are rather widely spaced (5 to 7 cm) so it runs quickly off its mount or out of its pot. After a few years your plant will be half a meter long!

Root formation is rather irregular, sometimes on new bulbs but sometimes also on older bulbs. Roots are not very long (3-6 cm) and often only a short time (2-3 months) active.

After trying growing it mounted and in a pot, I now have it in a shallow (4 cm) wooden basket, so in the growing season I can spray or mist it every day (which is necessary because half the roots are free growing in the air) and it will still dry up before evening. I give a cool winter rest with occasional light misting.

Good luck!

Jan

Epigeneiums love water. I mean they love it!

I own an Epigeneium sanseiense and the roots stay put. They don't die back every 2 or 3 months. And yeah, they're pretty short (about 1 or 1.5 cm long).

Have you tried mounting it on tree fern plaques or coconut coir plaques without moss? They don't really like to dry out.
