Wilt and bloom
Default Wilt and bloom

Hello,

Is it normal for flowers to start wilting while other buds start blooming?

The flowers have been opened for a couple of weeks. In the meanwhile, the buds stayed closed, but now, the early flowers are wilting while a couple buds have started to bloom.

I have not watered the plant since I got it 11 days ago but the roots still look green and not silvered/whitish yet. I spritz it with a mister every morning.

Not all orchids have all the buds on a spike bloom all at once. Yours is one of those.

I'm assuming you're talking about a hybrid Phal.

Thanks King,

Yes, it's a Purple Valley Phal., I don't know if that is a hybrid.

Should I just snip away the wilting ones?

It's got 3 spikes. When I got it, there were only opened flowers on one spike.

Also, the potting seems a little sparse, as the plant is leaning to one side. Should I fill in/pack in more potting?

Can I snip away roots that look dead?

Cool beans!

Yes, it's a hybrid Phal.

Dead roots can go.

Phals naturally grow over the pot because they naturally grow that way, not upright.

And you don't have to cut the wilting flowers off, they'll fall off themselves.

Here's a link to a pic of Phalaenopsis bellina in the wild. Scroll down to see it.

Thank you for all the help!

The Sarawak trip looks awesome. Pity about the forest going though.
