Thank you both. I guess I'll just have to try a few things and see what works. Cross your fingers for me

I agree with the advice above. Don't water to a strict schedule, but when it needs it.

If you have a clear pot you can see the medium low down in the pot. If it looks like it is still damp at the bottom, or there is condensation on the inside of the pot then don't water yet.

I thought Dendrobiums did not have roots that turn green when they have enought water. This is what happens on other orchids like Phals but my Dendrobium roots look different. But then I don't have a clear pot on my Dendrobium and I've not repotted it yet so I can't say for sure as I can only see those at the top.

One way to judge watering (which I do on my Den) is to use a wooden skewer which you keep pushed in to the medium. Pull it out and if it is damp or cold on your cheek then it is not time to water yet.

When you do water you should run the water through the pot (luke warm is best as already suggested) and make sure the medium gets thoroughly wet. Make sure it drains well after watering.

Getting the watering balance right is a big key to keeping many types of orchids.

Welcome to the Orchid Board GreenThumb!! This forum is a great source of information and help. The people here are wonderful and generous with advice. This forum is the only reason some of my chids are still alive!

Den roots are white then turn green when you water them. They are considerably smaller than Phal roots, though. I only know this for certain, because of several I have had to nurse back to health un-potted.

As for watering, as others have said, it's best not to keep a rigorous schedule. Watering depends on a couple of things: what medium it's growing in, what your growing conditions are like. If it's dry, you will probably need to water a bit more. If it's humid a bit less. The skewer method is a great way to figure out when to water. You will get the hang of it. Check out some of the other threads posted and you will certainly find some fantastic information.

Thanks for the advice on the wooden skewer I will try that. My pot isn't clear so I can't see the roots, so that sounds like a great way to tell if it needs more water. You have all been wonderful. Thanks for the help.
