Ahh there is just nothing like getting free orchids.
My aunt has a couple HUGE reed stem Epidendrums, so of course I asked if I could have some of the keiki's that had decent root systems. And now I have 4 keiki's to experiment with. Right now they are soaking in some water and superthrive until tomorrow when I re-pot them.
Just a quick question:
-I'm thinking about mounting one of them, what should I mount it on?

- also the plant had about 3 seed pods, she didn't artificially pollinate them either so something in socal pollinates them, anyone know what

you can mount it on anything from cork bark slabs to tree fern slabs.
i dont know which would be better for the plant, but from my experience, i couldnt kill these things if i wanted to.

where is the plant located,outside, indoors or maybe on a screened in porch??

Flowers are commonly pollinated by bees or other insects, but this is irrelevant.
the pollinated pods' seeds can be either collected once they open, germinated (with considerable effort) or smply removed now to save the plant some energy. in my opinion, especially due to this plants relative commonness (and therefore low monetary value), i certainly would opt for the latter.

Here are three photos of a phal that I was given as a present 6 months ago. It's still in flower as the picture shows. The roots seem healthy to me, but rather a tight fit! Can I repot it and should I try a bigger pot, as up until now I've managed to repot in pots of the same size, and if so what size should I go for? Thanks for your precious advice.

Kath, I could go up a minimum of half a pot size. I think I'd probably go up a full pot size. Did you notice you have a new spike started?

Yes! I'd noticed that today. I'm really pleased with this orchid. I've had it for six months and a new spike was more than I could have hoped for!

Those roots look packed in like one of mine I tried to re-pot recently.

I tried to use the same pot and it was a mistake, I should have gone up at least half a pot size. I only just got it back in (because I don't have any bigger pots).

You don't want to go too big on the pot, but I think you do need to go up.

Thanks for your advice. I'm not sure which pot I'll use, but the next size up would seem to be the best idea. I just hope that I can get all the roots in! Cinnamon will be needed if I have to cut back the roots. Seems like a shame, as they look so healthy!
