Default Dendrobium Blue Violetta losing leaves

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand that some Den. lose leaves while blooming and some during their winter rest (if needed). This plant has seemed very healthy and bloomed for months. It has finished blooming and has been losing leaves for a while. One or two at a time slowly turning yellow and then dying. Is this normal? This picture is a couple months old. Only 5-7 healthy leaves left. Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Check the roots. It may also be overpotted.

Overpotted...meaning the pot may be too big?

BTW, I don't think it's normal for this particular type of Dendrobium to rapidly drop a bunch of leaves. This is either an evergreen or semi-deciduous hybrid. At no point in time should all the canes lose all their leaves.

Yes, the pot may be too big. They need to be potbound.

Thats what I thought but since it never lost any flowers I figured I'd leave it alone and see what happened. Now that the blooming is over I'll check the roots and see whats up.

I'm not a grower of dens, but how can the pot-size advice be pertinent? The plant is growing and bloomed in the pot, so it can't be all that uncomfortable, can it?

In general, I find that a plant suddenly losing its leaves is probably suffering a root-related stress. How old is the medium?

I was thinking the same thing with the pot. As far as the medium goes, I'm not sure...so I'm going to change it and check out the roots. Thanks

I said the pot MAY be too big. And I DID say to CHECK THE ROOTS. My advice is still pertinent if THERE IS ROOT DAMAGE AND ROOT LOSS. Even if there wasn't, it's still possible it could be overpotted. A plant blooming MAY NOT be a good indicator of how well the plant is doing. Think of all those blooming Phalaenopsis with roots that are literally destroyed. There are plenty of these running around.

I mean go ahead and disagree if I'm way off to left field, but...

You've basically agreed with what I had to say...more or less.
