Phalaenopsis leaf damage Female
Default Phalaenopsis leaf damage

Does anyone know how I damaged the leaves on my Phal? I'm hoping it is sun damage and not from a virus. The first two pictures are the top of the leaf, the last one is the bottom. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's not sunburn. It's not spider mites.

It's more likely fungal or viral with slight possibility of bacterial, although I think the two former answers are the better diagnoses.

If you own a microscope of any kind, you can take a cotton swab and rub it on the sores and put them on a slide to see if they're fungal.

If it's viral, there's a test out there for them, I don't know the cost.

BTW between fungal and viral, I'm leaning towards viral.

Fungal damage usually present themselves as dark circular blotches. You know, the whole fairy ring story, with mushrooms arranged in a ring.

Bacterial infections are usually more irregular and turns the plant cells to mush.

Again, the only way to know for sure is to test. There are a few different kinds of viral infections, with Cymbidium Mosaic Virus being one of the most well known.

Looks to me like it could be cold damage (which it will outgrow) or the start of mesophyll cell collapse.

Cold damage is different from the picture shown. On top of the light patches at the beginning, there're also black blotches.

I think it's something else...

unless...there's more information that failingflopsis can contribute as far as growing conditions, and if it was ever exposed to extremely cold conditions regardless of how brief the exposure was.
