I am pretty new to orchids and very new to this forum. In reading earlier posts, I saw the discussion on clear plastic pots. What was the outcome? Has anyone found a supplier in Canada?
My hubby bought me a phal (my very first orchid), from a grocery store about four years ago. It was in a clear plastic pot. It just keeps growing and blooming. There is moss growing on the inside of the pot.
Also, I take it that some dendrobiums lose their leaves and you're left with a bare cane. Now what should I do with it? It has had quite a few leaves over the winter but suddenly the leaves are turning yellow to brown and falling off. It is in my porch which faces sort of south. The blinds are adjusted to let in plenty of light but not direct sunlight. The temp ranges from about 75 during the day to about 60 at night.
I live about an hour and a half out of Edmonton and am anxiously awaiting the orchid show in a couple of weeks.

Hi Karen,

The result of the clear pot discussion was that a few of us Edmontonians joined forces and ordered from First Rays orchids, as we could not locate a source in Canada. Their website has a good selection with pictures so that you can be sure you are selecting exactly what you want. TeresaE coordinated the order, so I am not really sure what the extra charges were for the whole thing (duty, GST etc). It was pretty reasonable. I have also ordered from Charley's Greenhouse in the past - very quick, sightly more expensive. Are you looking for only a couple of pots or a bunch? I could probably help you out if it's a couple or three.

The Orchid Society of Alberta Show promises to very good. Also looking forward to it. There will be many vendors with plants to sell, some are accepting pre-orders. Be sure to check the OSA website - there is a discount coupon for admission.

Not much to say about the Den. Only ever grown den. senile, unicum and secundum. Bare canes were a seasonal thing prior to flowering. Mine grew in a windowsill with the seasonal temps of the window!

You guys want clear pots???

well it just so happends that a client of mine (Heron Ridge Farms & imports) will be going live with a website that has an online store. Im not trying to push a company here but i know how hard it can be to find Canadian suppliers as well. When the web site is up if people are interested i will gladly post a link.

Default Dens

Some Dens drop all of their leaves as a natural part of growth. Some bloom on the leafless canes. We usually leave the canes alone until they have remained bare and with no blooms for 2 years and then we cut them off. It just depends on which type you have.

Hello Karen,

My name is Chuck Taylor. I'll be vending at the show in Edmonton. Stop by and see me at Fatoldbaldguy Orchids. I use a lot of clear pots. I can give you some ideas (CHEAP IS THE WORD) and show you some examples. You will also have to go through the mandatory sales pitch titled "You should join the Orchid Society of Alberta". Looking forward to seeing you at the show next weekend.

Chuck
