Re-rooting a Paph. spicerianum
At the local orchid society's plant sale today, I picked up some Paphs and a Phrag. This one, a Paph spicerianum, was proclaimed to "desperately need repotting" according to a much more experienced grower than I. I've been shown how to re-pot but never done it myself, nonetheless I was optimistic that I couldn't screw up too bad.
Maybe I should have asked them to help me with it... but it was late and everyone was in a hurry to get home. So I got advice on what to pot it in (half bark, half Oakhill potting mix, plus charcoal) and when I got home I carefully removed it from its former home. I immediately knew it was not going to be pretty, because 90% of the mix fell away and revealed no roots, and only a bit of mix remained stuck to the base of the leaves (which look fairly healthy to me, and the people at the club are nice enough they would have told me if they thought it looked like it was dying). I teased out the decomposed mix (it was gooey, yuck) and the plant proceeded to fall in half. This is what remains.
For the moment, I potted both halves in the recommended mix in hopes that something is still alive down there and taking in water.
Can anyone tell me, is this a lost cause? What can I do to help it (if anything?)?
