Moss Experiment Goes Haywire--Help

I like sphag for my phals too, but that's because I grow in a warm room with grow lights. They dry out pretty fast in there, sometimes too fast (I underwater too). I have taken the same phals and put them in my dark living room while they're blooming. They stay wet for weeks and I lose a lot of roots. I try not to leave them there for more than a few days any more.
