I would disagree about trying a grocery store or big box phal. They've often been through so much abuse in shipping and hanging around the store, that they are pretty stressed even if they still look fine. I would spend a few more dollars and buy a phal from an orchid greenhouse, you don't have to get the biggest and most expensive one.

If you buy a bix box phal and it fails in your office, you won't know whether to blame the office or the big box store.

Sheila, I would tend to agree, but then again if you inspect your big box store orchid before you purchase it, you know what you're in for... I can't tell you how many times I've yanked an orchid out of its pot at some large chain to get a gander at the roots while other shoppers oogle me like I'm a crazed lunatic

Fritz, I certainly hope you can find what you're looking for and are able to successfully grow your exotics!

LinhT is going to take me under her wing for orchid shopping and I am going to do the same for reefing stock list (help me! She has some exotic and difficult tastes), when we can somehow manage our schedules to match. I presume she can get me past the noob mistakes

Thanks for the input from everyone.

I just want to clarify the question a bit in order to help Fritz figure out if his environment will work. I think most of us grow our orchids with the night temps being somewhat lower than the day temps or the same. His situation is a little different.

We're trying to find out if anyone here has grown their chids in an environment where the LIGHTS OFF period has HIGHER TEMPS than the LIGHTS ON period. Has anyone tried this with success??

I've never actually had the nerve to knock an orchid (or any other kind of plant) out of the pot in the store to check the roots. I will lift it up and look at the drain holes to see what I can deduce about the roots, however (usually I can't tell very much).

Well, I'm all for it... I say make the associates clutch their pearls (necklace) in shock! I will not purchase a plant that I can't tell enough about it's root structure's health... I say yank it out and check it over! I may get tossed out of an establishment for being so crass, but not before I purchase a new 'chid

I believe this is what we settled on (it was pretty high on my picks anyhow, so there wasn't so much "settling" going on:
