That's funny about you and the other woman. I can just imagine the scene, the both of you fighting over the plant. Cut to a scene of the both of you in jail at the county police station trying to explain it away!

Actually, I backtracked and said " Well, you have it if you like, I've ten more at home" and she, being British, said"Oh, no, you have it, I've lots of others too!" I think your scenario would be more likely in the US. Or if I'd offered to give it up, an American would have said, "Well, gee, if you're sure, thank you very much," and taken it......

I would have snagged that baby too!!! I have one that is white with dark purple spots, unfortunately it's only a growing keiki, since I tried to kill it by giving it crown rot. I can't wait to see it bloom again. Great find and I'm glad you grabbed it before the other person did!!!!

*sigh* You've no idea how much it saddens me to agree with you on that. I fear that the majority of Americans are quite deserving of the bad reputation we've made for ourselves with the rest of the world. But we aren't all like that. I hope the world can remember that small hope.
Anywhooo....On to a lighter topic, like your gorgeous NOID! It's shape sort of reminds me of a bat, or a manta ray. It just seems very different, and then there's the fantastic spotting! I love purple, at least on most flowers, if not other things. You've made a very nice find!

Evan, I wasn't having a go at you folks, it's just I think we British still suffer from giving way when we should grab hold of what we want and run for it! A few years ago I wouldn't have even reached in front of her to pick it up - now I am nearing 50 I am finally aware that you only have one chance to make your life as good as it can be, by that I don't mean being rude to people to get what you want, just being assertive when you know you are right.
My second example of an American saying "thank you" and taking the "gift" as they would see it reflects how I feel we British tend to say one thing for politeness' sake and mean the opposite - this woman knew I wasn't serious about giving up the plant, but we played the game of manners.
Old world, new world - do you mean what you say or say what you mean?
Thanks to everyone for the compliments, I agree it's definitely different
Regards Heather

Thanks for saying this Hedge-- I can't say I know the same people Evan knows, but as an American I can safely speak for all the other American's I personally know that rudeness is not our mode of operation. Neither is being unfair.
Just for the record, I would have insisted you take the orchid, but I would have exchange info with you, hoping to score a keiki later on.

What can I say, I'm far too cynical for my years. Actually, I think I was worse when I was younger. Imagine one of those little kids with the spirit of a bitter 90-year-old.
I didn't mean ALL Americans were like that. Although the ones that are like that certainly get more attention. And I certainly didn't think you were taking a jab at Americans. I believe everyone on Orchid Board is too kind to voice negative opinions in that manner (personally, I would never target any nationality other than my own. sort of a "I'm allowed because I live there" thing, even though I should probably keep my big mouth shut even then)
I do believe that assertiveness (to an extent) and saying what you mean are some of our best qualities. If we could just moderate it with a little more understanding and acceptance.
*sigh* Enough philosophy. I need to look at the brighter side of things, like beautiful orchids!
