So I've decided I'm going to trim down the spike like people suggested. I'm also going to repot in a clear pot and put that in a clay pot for decorative purposes.

Does this look like it would an effective repotting medium?
Better-Gro at Lowe's: 8-Quart Orchid Bark

Also, do I look into a fertilizer? I've read that you dont fertilize when the blooms are present but when they aren't you should. Whats the word on this?

I use the Better-Gro, but the chunks are rather big and the water flows right thru. I mix it 1/3 bark, 1/3 coconut husks, 1/3 sheet moss. That seems to hold enough moisture, yet lets air circulate around the roots.
I fertilize 3 weeks and flush with water on the 4th week, all year long. Phals will do just fine with a balanced fertilizer. I use Grow-Mor Urea free 20-10-20, which is readily availible at garden centers.

Good Luck,
Bill
