Need help finding some pictures
Hi Everyone,
I'm searching for some pictures of a number of orchids my grandfather bred and registered, and don't really know where or how to best begin. I've done some basic Google searches, but only come up with the Lime Royal. My grandfather's name was Joseph Riley Beckenbach, and was apparently quite well known in the orchid community a number of years ago. I've been told that he named orchids for each of his children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, he and my grandmother both passed a way a number of years ago, so I can't ask him. Any help would be greatly apprecialted.

Hi Jim
What a cool, probably frustrating, journey you're on!
I checked the Orchidwiz software and found 54 orchids with your last name showing as the originator...and only 2 of those are named something other than what seems to be a person's name. I think your getting the info you seek is closer than you thought

Interesting story. The site below has three under that name. Did he live in Texas?

Sorry, there are actually 26 different plants listed...some of them are also listed under other genus names they are/have been known as
I only checked a few and the ones I did look at show the originator being in Florida, mid 70-late 80s or so

Hi Jim! One of the ones Sue mentioned in OrchidWiz is Epicattleya James Joseph. Would that be you? There isn't a picture and it doesn't appear to have any offspring. It was registered back in 1973. This is the cross. Epc. James Joseph (Epi. magnoliae x Sc. Florence Machle).

Yes, that should be him. 26 is more than I expected, but pretty much any one by him named for a person is going to be one I'm trying to locate.

Yes! That is indeed me. Was there also by chance one with Brian in the name? That would be my late brother. I'd like to track down all the varieties my grandfather named for family members, but most especially the James Joseph, any named for John or Jack, and the one named for my brother. John was my father, and he passed away this past September. I can't think of a much cooler thing to be able to give to my mom than pictures of the orchids named for my father, myself, and my brother. Unless, of course, I can manage to get my hands on actual specimens.

No, he lived in Chicago until, I believe, the mid- to late 30's, then moved to Florida where he stayed until he passed away in the 80's. Those specimens are quite likely his, however. I'll be contacting the folks at the site for more information on those three, thank you.

Jim, I don't have any information for you, just wanted to wish you well on your quest. Sounds like a very considerate thing you're doing for your family.
