Ryan, I like to use the wooden stir sticks I get from Starbucks. They re a great way of reading how wet the center of the medium is. It's always right. The stick from SB's are also very thing and small so there is less chance of doing damage to the roots. I also always place the stick back into the same hole. Cheap and effective. Chas-- I'll give that a try on the phals that still use the bark medium. The ones with hydro will be a little more difficult but it should work the same way, no?

Ha! I know what you mean. I was up late as well messing with orchids.
