Initial quarantine period
I have been adding any and all new 'chids right in with my others. A quarantine period seems like a good idea since I'm battling with mealies going from plant to plant. How long do you all keep new plants separated? Oh yea and did I mention...bugs SUCK!

Hi Chris, I usually quarantine for about 30 days or so. If I repot right when I bring a new one home, sometimes the quarantine period is only 2 weeks. So far I have not had a bug problem------I need to find some wood fast!

I don't quarantine. I'm positive that I should, but have no space to do so. I have been lucky so far and haven't had any problems. Should probably stop pressing my luck! Maybe the guest bedroom should serve as my quarantine space. Gonna need a light!

I know, that's my problem. I only really have one good growing area and would need some lights to setup an additional space.

I want to set up additional space for my orchids as well, but alas purchasing artificial lighting costs money (which I could spend on more orchids and just deal with what lighting I have)

Hi Joann, 30 days...wow! It took me a minute to get what you meant about the wood. You meant to knock on, I thought from the you were saying something entirely different!

I usually try for 30 days too, but if I buy another plant I start running out of room and the quarantined plants don't really get the lighting they need

I repot every plant upon arrival. I examine the roots and leaves, spray with an insecticidal spray and test for viruses. If the virus testing is negative and the roots look good, I'll introduce the plant to the others, otherwise, if there is a question, they get introduced after 2 weeks of "good behavior".

Sorry about that ...I was in a hurry and didn't proof read before I sent it. I should have paid more attention as to how it would be read. I'm glad you figured it out
