So I repotted my latest addition a few days ago.

Out with the nasty, compacted, stays way too wet moss and in with the new Schultz Orchid Mix. I let the new mix sit in a bucket of water for 24 hours before repotting.
Getting the mess of the moss out of the roots of the Phal was the hardest part. The roots were large, long, twisted and compacted. Once I freed the plant from the pot (reaaly wedged in there) I started the hardest part, removing the packed in moss from the roots. I had to slowly andcarefully grab small amounts of moss and pull it from the roots. In doing this I only partially broke one root. I was pretty happy with that small feat!
After I got all the moss out I flushed the roots with some fresh water, inspected the roots for any rot (none) and then began the putting it back together. There were a couple large voids in the center area of the root mass that I had to pack the bark mix into before putting the plant into the pot. then I had to slowly and carefully keep packing more mix into te smaller spaces. I tapped the pot on the table top a couple of times to get it to settle as well. In the end the plant seems real happy, none of the buds have blasted, no droopy sadness, nothing. I think I was successful only because of the great info I got from this fine community. Thank You!

A question: How do these roots look to you? I think they are OK, but I want the experts to tell me.

And the end result:

I suggest the use of O'Dell brewing products during repotting. 90 Shilling makes things go a lot easier.

Nice bloom Chas!!! Where did you get this one? Did you see the add in the paper about Phals at the local grocery stores? They're all on sale. I haven't been out of the house since the blizzard so I don't know the selections yet.

Thanks folks! I was kinda worried because I just didn't know. Thanks.

Dan, my carlnoidious is in full glory and I thought it was in moss, but I found out differently. Wood chips!, with a moss cover. This plant is simply "On Fire!" I have three blooms open, four more to go and it has three new leaves growing well. One new tiny one. I thought they either made leaves or they made flowers, but not both at the same time.

Ryan, I got the large red (someone said it might be called Harliquein Pearl) from O'Toole's Garden Center in Littleton. I was there working on a TV commercial for them and they had this wonderful plant. I saw they had two others with the same flowers on them. They gave me a 25% discount so I couldn't resist! I didn't see that ad, but I think lots of stores are offing their Phals right now.
