New Orchid attacked by kitten = Q's galore
Question New Orchid attacked by kitten = Q's galore

Newbie here. My family went to the Marie Selby Botanic Gardens in Sarasota, FL. I came home (Memphis,TN) with a Dendrobium Oriental Smile 'Fantasty' AD/AOS. First off, what type of Dendrobium is an AD? (I assume the AOS is for American Orchid Society?)
This cutie is in full bloom. There are 4 stalks in a teeny tiny pot with a multitude of white roots poking out. It appears to be growing a new stalk. This plant is staked~but doesn't stand up. I have to prop it against something. So, that brings on the question if I can re pot it while it is in bloom? how big should the pot be?

With that said, the kitten attacked the plant... which sent the coconut shells scattering and several leaves nibbled. The kitten is still alive. (I haven't called the vet to see if kitty needs a detox) I could not get all the coconut shells back into the pot with the plant. Talk about frustration for both of us!

I reacted by placing this 'cutie' inside a very large clear glass receptacle which was as tall as the 4 stalks. Now the leaves are really mad as evidenced by their gold color. 'Cutie' (everything gets named by my daughter) is no longer in my kitchen by the window. I took it out of the glass holder and put it on my mantle (beware kitten) after giving it it's weekly watering. Our family room has numerous windows flanking either side of the mantle and across the room. No direct sun on the mantle. I attempted to look up yellow leaves and orchids and found numerous causes.

So, what do I do about the yellow leaves? will they fall off? The roots still look white~ they were quite dry, but white & healthy with no buggies. Not all nibbled leaves are yellow.
Your help will be much appreciated by 'cutie' and Daughter. Thank you ~ will check back in the am.
So relieved to have found this support site = cool!

Hi Mya, welcome to the OB.
AD the American Orchid Society's award of distinction. It is awarded to a cross (hybrid) as a new direction in breeding of the plants. Your den is a nobile type and loses its leaves before blooming. They need bright light and humidity. Can you post a picture or two, that will help in answers to your repotting questions.

First up your plant has been awarded AM/AOS , that is very good. I would tend to water a little more often, 2 times a week at least and as the temp rises water 3 times a week, these can stand a fair amount of sun ( Not Direct )

the plant has an AD/AOS, not an AM/AOS. see this information on AOS awards. how often you should water depends on several factors, such as humidity, and how well your potting medium retains moisture. you should wait until the potting medium is fairly dry before watering again. if it gets really dry, you may need to water more often.

Good choice Mya. Such beautiful blooms. I have one too, though it didn't get enough light to bloom this year. They need a winter chill. Mine is top heavy too, and tends to tip over in it's plastic pot. I placed the plant and plastic pot in a heavier clay pot to hold it up. This has worked well for me. Carol

'Fantasty' was awarded a AM/AOS in 1981

Default Thanks

I will get a picture posted soon. My battery died on my camera and I am unable to find the cord.
The 2 outer stalks are looking wrinkled... they do not have flowers. The 2 inner stalks (w flowers) now looked wrinkled too- which I did not notice the other day. Is that related to the watering/light/kitty attack?

Our house humidity has been around 65%. Very rainy here lately... but normally humidity above 40%. We keep the house at 69 degrees. I will water 2 times a week. Thank you for the advise. I'll keep checking back. I will search for the cord and charge my camera battery. The flowers are so beautiful.

Mya, the wrinkled pseudobulbs are normal. See the Care Sheet for more information on how to care for it.

Warren, the information I have is that Den. Oriental Smile was registered in 1995 by Yamamoto Dendrobiums of Hawaii. the "Fantasy" cultivar was released in 2006, and recieved an AD/AOS that year. Can somebody with OrchidWiz verify this?

Oriental Smile was registered in 1995 by Yamamoto. I'll check the rest...it will be good practice. Grin. Carol
