I learned just how damaging over watering can be...lost one and about to lose another I am trying to bring it back but i really don't think its going to happen.

Not to worry...we've all lost a chid or a few chids along the way

It's really a learn-as-you-go endeavor

Don't worry Herf. It's always a shame to loose a 'chid, but that just makes it all the more rewarding when they are healthy.

Don't give up, learn from any mistakes and try again

Oh, and read all you can here and lean from our mistakes as well

I am sorry Herf, I have done the same to two phals, killed one and the other is looking fatally injured due to my overwatering the first one though I bought sick which was a mistake when I had never owned an Orchid before, Best way i got over my loss was to go out and buy 3 more orchids to get my mind off the sad loss of my first one then of course when i went and found that the second one was sick I went and bought 6 seedlings my latest explosion of orchids I have no excuse other than I have become addicted. my husband is going mad about the amount I have bought and the lack of space for them but I assured him I will find a way and will no doubt have trouble with some of them as they are all different and I have so much to learn but if i hadnt lost and injured these two I prob wouldnt have bought so many so beware soon you will have a house full of 'chids and wonder what happened

I'm only just starting to get addicted, but I jokingly suggested converting one of our two spare bedrooms into an Orchid room.

He took me semi seriously and has been looking into whether the table in there would fit by the window to put more 'chids on

Just got to find a good supplier arround here (or on the web who ship to the UK). I feel like my garden center has nothing new to offer (just NOID phals, which I keep being tempted by but want something more).

Carrie... do you have a good place to get them from up there in the north?

I dont have a local supplier unfortunately but have ordered from Burnhams Nurseries in Devon and they have been superb, postage is £10 for overnight delivery how ever many you get so Id recommend waiting till you can buy more than one to spread the cost. I have also bought some beauties off ebay, though I have made a couple of mistakes and ended up with plants that are a lot bigger than expected and in varying degrees of health, I got my Phal equestris var alba on ebay and am very happy with it and I recieved this morning a paph that is enormous and really dont have the space for but this is part of the joy of ebay not quite knowing what your gonna get, I would reccomend Burnhams though, ordered twice from them and have been very pleased with the plants that arrived each time.

Thanks Carrie, i'll look them up.

Sorry Herf, didn't mean to hijack your thread
I'm very similar to Carrie, it was almost killing one of my Phals which actually got me into the hoby more. I came here to OB for advice to try and save it (jury is still out on whether I've managed to save that one) and got hooked as I read more and more about these fantastic plants.

Anyway, hope you can pursade your wife to let you try again.
