repotting a phal; photos before and after
I have repotted a phal, and I'm sending photos before andd after the operation. I washed off the old medium, and any stray mealie bugs still trying to hang on! I cut back the old roots, and those I cut, I treated with cinnamom. I planted it in fresh new medium, and then I watered the plant, and it's now sitting in front of the window smiling at me! I only hope it'll survive the treatment and the new spike that's on the plant will survive!I await your conclusions!!

Looks pretty good, Kath. I might have potted it a little deeper, but that's just a personal preference. Just remember that in new medium it's going to dry out a lot faster than it used to, so don't let it go too long between waterings for a few weeks. Try to keep it warm, but out of direct light too. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I would have potted it a little deeper, but as I was using the same pot, I couldn't push the roots any further in! I hope it'll be ok. Thanks for your comments Kim!

Looks good to me! I've repotted plants in spike before and they've been just fine. Don't forget to post some pictures when it blooms!

Tuvoc asked for a photo of my phal when it flowered, so here it is. I'm rather pleased with it at the moment. There are lots of buds as well! This plant has come a long way. When we moved house, it started to give me buds, and they died, probably of over-watering, so today I'm really proud! I shall bring it down to the conservatory now that the buds seem to be firm and on its way!
Here's a subsiduary question. Can anyone tell me what the last flower is. Found it growing in the garden.

Kath, your phal looks great. I'd be proud too. Your other plant is an arum of some sort. I don't know which one, but I really like it. I grow a dracunculus, which is similar, but red in color. Have you taken a whiff of it yet? Some of them can be real stinkers.

I've found it.Its Latin name is Arum maculatum,
common English name “Lords and Ladies” with his lordship standing upright between the skirts of her ladyship in polite parlance,
or “Cuckoo Pint”.

The orchid looks gorgeous, you have an unbelievable amount of buds on it!
As for the Aroid, it's either Arum maculatum like Kath suggests, or Arum italicum. The blooms on both are identical, but italicum has white veins on the leaves, while maculatum does not. After these finish blooming the spadix is covered in beautiful red (and highly toxic) fruits. They really are very pretty! I have several italicum growing wild in my yard.

It's arum maculatum, as there are no veins on the leaves. You can see the leaves just behind the flower. I've looked it up, and there seems to be lots of kinds of this type of arum - all toxic, from what I gather!

Here is the same orchid in full flower. I hope it won't tire out with the effort of producing all those flowers! Should I feed it a little, or let it get on with life on it's own. I find that if I leave these things, they seem to do better!
