Went to the local club meeting... my first orchids! - Orchid Board

So tonight I thought I'd go visit the local orchid club meeting (Illowa) and see what I could learn.
Everyone was very friendly and there were many orchids blooming that had been brought in to admire. They also had a raffle, with 5 Cattleyas - 3 big ones, and two small ones. I bought 6 tickets and put them all in for the unknown hybrid of the little ones. They also had a door prize Dendrobium "Emma- Burana White." Well, the nice man who won the door prize decided that I should have it since I didn't have any orchids yet... I thanked him and then picked his brain for "how do I not kill this plant". I then proceeded to win my little cattleya! I'm looking forward to seeing it bloom, because nobody knows what it will look like! He said that they will both like living outside in the spring/summer once it warms up a bit, but they'll have to wait until June.
I'll post photos when I get some - its dark at the moment. The Den is in bloom. I was worried that I hurt it when I was searching for parking spots - I was looking down a row and forgot that there is a massive pot hole. I wonder if its a sign that I have a problem, when my car went "BANG" as it hit the pothole... and my first thought was "OMG what if that broke the flower stalk on my new orchid!?"

(I still plan to order a lepanthes from Andy's orchids...

No it's not a problem that your first thought was the orchid when you hit the pot hole - its the natural order of things

I was hooked three years ago in Ecuador. It's jsut taken me this long to get up the courage to obtain some.

Two orchids in one night is no bad!! You'll see, these guys are just the first of very many orchids. Next thing you'll know, they will have taken over the house!

Way to go, Jess! I'm happy to hear you had such a great experience at your first meeting. If you decide to join the club, please think about volunteering when they ask for help. So many clubs have a hard time getting people to participate, they'll really appreciate your help

The first one is the little Catt, followed by the whole Den, and then flowers! They're in the window in the apartment living room but my roommate is watching TV so the blinds are closed - I put them on the other side of the blinds so they can soak up what light there is to be had on this nice warm, cloudy day.

Great going Jess!

My first thought would have been to the orchid as well.

My sister has different priorities, she crashed the car when her oboe case fell forward in the footwell and she reached to grab it and steared into a ditch. Luckily she was going slow and it was still on our Dad's land right near the house so he came and pulled her out with the tractor.

I would probably have done the same for an Orchid

Congrats on your new 'chids! I'm glad you had such a good time at your first meeting. It can be scary to just jump in.

That's a beautiful den too.
