A spotty phal for a spotty gal

I just adore mine. Its called a Harliquin so I don't know if this is the same as what you refer to as spotty phals. Its just started to bloom yesterday and I couldn't be more excited on this phal. I just think its the most unusual flower, as tho the white pedals have been dipped in fuchia ink.

Calling a Phal a 'harlequin' is like calling one a 'mini' .. it's just a word to describe an outstanding characteristic but it's not considered a 'legal' term but more a colloquialism ...

Aaaaaah! I didn't know that. I thought the 'ink dipped' pedals (is how I describe them to friends) was how it was differentiated from other phals. I love learning something new - Thank you. This phal has become my most fav phal.

My brother was just here for a visit from snow ridden Ohio and it was in bud but they didn't start to open until about 4 days after he left. I really wanted him to see it.

You're safe here- you can't enable me.. I can't stop buying orchids no matter what. Um... but thanks for those links.. A girl can always use a link or ten.

I've only seen the one kind I have which is a Dtps 1-Hsln 'Black Jack' which is a white pedal with dark fuschia blotches. I just went out and took a couple pix of it. Only one flower has opened so far tho. I'll get it posted here in a bit. Seems all my phals and dens are either blooming or in bud getting ready to show off their beauty. I'm hoping my catts go crazy this year.

Wow, great pictures of Harlequins in those links Dorothy.

They had some in my local shop last summer and I kept looking at them each time I went in, but I didn't buy for two reasons...
1. They were NOID
2. I am trying to diversify into things other than Phals.

But each time I see pics of Harlequins I kind of wish I had got one anyway.

Hmm... wonder if I could get some extra ones past my hubby this year... get some non-phals but sneak in some more phals as well...

Sadly, my spotty phal is not doing well. I've had it for a week and a a half, and all the aerial roots are shriveling up. This behavior started at the beginning of the week, and I've already had it into the orchid shop. Not sure why this is happening. It's odd, as my other 2 phals in the same environment are doing well and have normal aerial roots. I have resorted to spritzing several times a day and keeping a damp paper towel over them (keep in mind we have low humidity at the office).

I'll give it until next Monday before I make a decision on it. I may soon be in the market for another spotty phal (or 2 or 3...).

Sounds like, after a week and half, it's going through environmental adjustments .. don't give up on it .. it might just be sulling ..
