I have several humidity trays of various sizes and capabilities. 2 can be partially drained. I use water that has 1 tablesp(15ml) Physan-20 per gallon (3.8L) and have no problems with growing things. I move all my plants to the kitchen sink to water but occasionally I will water on the tray which allows residue. Also, a lot of dust settles on the water so, reluctantly, about every 3 months I drain the ones that will and suction the remaining water out with a turkey baster. The smaller ones, I wait until they mostly dry and bring to the sink for a thorough washing. I wash them with some Formula 409.
This works out well and nothing gross is ever there should someone look.

why not? and copper mine tailings for the rocks...

Donald, I'll bet the trays do look very very good! I'm personally envious, I really love copper fixtures, cookware, other implements. Are the trays expensive? Are they specifically for plants, or did you re-purpose a tray that was intended for another purpose?

I only wanted to address the subject of whether lava rocks were necessary. I believe the copper alone yields the effective result. I certainly didn't want to belittle your taste, nor your idea about how it works.

Somewhere on this site I saw humidity trays that were pictured and were made out of the boot trays that you use for putting messed up footwear in after you come in for the outdoors. The trays were shown with fittings that allowed for the draining of the excess water. I have spent much time trying to find the pictures and the explanation of how the trays were altered. Can anyone help me find where I saw this information?
