repotting Onc may have been a mistake... help
Default repotting Onc may have been a mistake... help

I just got a howards dream about a week ago. I took it home and noticed that the plant was potted in moss and had bark on the top (like they were hiding the potting medium) I know that I would end up over watering it and even though the moss was in great shape i decided to repot. I took a 50/50 mixture of bark and moss, checked over the roots (I was impressed) and since it was dripping wet when i got it i let it dry our for about an hr or so and repotted it. After repotting it i waited a couple days before soaking it in just water and b1. I have been keeping my eye on it and the bulbs dont seem as plump as they were. Could it be cause i switched from moss to moss/bark and its more open now? I have been keeping close eye on the moisture in the medium and it takes a while to dry out. I soaked it again last night. My question is... will the bulbs plump up again? and should I not have repotted it? I was gentle and the root damage was very minimal

Oncids can be real sulky babies when they get repotted.
I understand why you repotted for fear of the 100% moss factor. I think the 50/50 mix is a good one. You're orchid needs to go thru some adjustment time - a month or 2 perhaps, then you should see the bulbs plump back up again. It might even make some new ones soon.

Now, when I repotted my oncids ... I don't water. The moss it squeezed out to dampness and the bark is tossed in dry. I keep the top sprayed for the 1st week, then water very lightly for the new 2 weeks. By the 3rd week its back to normal. This has worked much better for me then the old repot drenching way - I lost too many roots when I forced them to drink and they just wanted to recover from the potting.

I wouldn't worry about you're repotting - just give it a few weeks, it should get better ... easy on the water.

I actually used the old moss cause it was in great shape. It was long and fuzzy and soft, didnt fall apart so i laid it out on a bag and pointed a heater at it to dry it out a bit. It was till moist but not wet then i mixed in the dry bark that i didnt soak and potted it. After a couple of days i let it soak for a while to get the bark wet, drained it well and put it in its spot. The pot I'm using has lots of holes and i used it so the plant would dry out quick cause I'm more prone to over watering. I'm just worried
