Ok, my phal has lost one of its three leaves. It looks like the base of the plant is being consumed by something. Any ideas? Why are these things so hard to grow?

I find it hard to define what the problem is but it seems as if the stem is broken? Could that be the case?

The plant is lying on its side, the stem is not broken. It looks like something is eating through it.

I looked at the picture again and to be honest, I think it won't survive. The stem has a lot of damage. Maybe it will produce a basal keiki to survive, but still, I've no clue what could have caused this :-(
