Dendrobiums don't bloom for me!
Default Dendrobiums don't bloom for me!

My cattleyas, phals, and oncidiums grow and bloom for me. I have them in a North window with artificial (sodium) light for 16 hours per day. In the summer I take all of my plants outside. I do not control the humidity other than having some excess water in the overflow dishes under the plants. I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area so you can figure out the type of outdoor weather I have. Catts bloom indoors, phals indoors and out, oncidiums usually bloom outdoors for me.

My question concerns dendrobiums. I cannot get any to bloom. I imagine this is due to the conditions they need. Is there any type that would blossom under the conditions I currently have?

Default Non Blooming Dendrobiums

To begin with, what types of "dens" do you have.
There are some that can be treated as regular orchids and others, the nobile types, that need to be put on a regimen of no watering until buds form. I live in Massachusetts and grow the orchids I have in a heated, ventilated sunroom whose temp averages about 75 during the day and 60 at night. The humidity rarely goes above 40. I would say that first you need to post the identity of the "dens" you have, then knowing the intelligence that resides on this website you will be inundated with solutions.

Actually I gave up on dendrobiums because they just would not bloom for me. I am hoping to get an idea of which ones, or how to get them to bloom. I do like the blossoms and would like to have one or two along with my other orchids. As a side I can get paphs to bloom. Maybe that helps with some suggestions.

Increase the light level. Do you fertilize it regularly?

It's either not enough light and/or food.

Dendrobiums is the most diversified genus of orchids. Forst of all you have to find out which dendrobiums you have.
Kingianum hibrids like cool temperatures / high light levels.
Nobile types also appreciate cool temps.
Phalaenopsis type like it moderate to warm.
Biggibums - warm.

Some dendrobiums need the rest time in winter with little or no watering then.

Thanks for the suggestions Vina.

I am checking out the Kingianum hibrids because this sounds much like the conditions I have.

I would suggest Den. Berry 'Oda'. It's one of the kingianum hybrids which ir easier to grow that kingianum.
