Roots In Danger

Hello Friends! I have 4 cyms that I am trying very hard to help. They were rescued from my husbands grandmothers house and are not doing well.

They keep getting brown soggy roots. I repotted them in CHC and stopped watering to induce root growth. I recently set up a small fan to improve circulation. I have them under a light for the winter since i live in Pittsburgh, PA and get no real quality sun this time of year.

My healthy roots keep turning brown. Like there is too much moisture, but If i am not watering them, how can that be?

the roots don't always stay white. Sometimes Cym roots will take on some of the colour of the media, go tan- light brown, get dark flecks on the areas where the roots stuck to a piece of media. Only the very tip of my Cym roots are white. I'm wondering if the roots turning brown are just stained. I noticed coconut husk stained my heathy den roots to a questionable brown

Are the roots mushy or just brown?

picture definitely would be helpful
also would add that this time of year my cyms are not growing roots, so you may just need to wait until spring ?
I also pretty much leave cyms alone this time of year - might water once a month or so if there hasn't been rain (mine are however outside, so indoors they might dry out faster) but they still don't seem to want much water this time of year - just keep slightly moist.
I really think it may just be the time of year and in spring with more light and warmth you may see more growth.

Also - trying to remember - arent these back bulbs you are trying to propagate? if so - the old bulbs will not grow roots but will get new growth which in time will grow roots.

Other thoughts - what are temps where the plants are located?
Is there any new growth?

Thanks Rabbit. Yes these are the same plants I was talking about in "Grandma Ruth Orchids" post.

I keep on trying to find valuable info on the web and in books but i cant find very much "new to me" info.

It is a bit on the chilly side where I have these plants. Thermometer in room says 60. Is that too cold? I thought the chill was ok for cyms?

The plants dont look any different but my curosity got to me so I keep inspecting the roots. Its good to know that the media can color the roots.

I can't wait for spring.
