About 4 years ago I bought 3 Masda. Dumb me, I didn't know they needed cool conditions. They lasted about 6 months, and I never tried another one. I will stick to medium or warm growing orchids. Phrags live my conditions.

Paphs and Phals don't like me at all either
couldn't tell you how many have committed suicide while in my care ...
haven't tried phrags yet - maybe I should stay away from those as well

I didnt kill this one but came pretty close. When I last popped over to Maui (May 2008) for a week I had just mounted a Catt violacea on a peice of wood that was really not liking its new home. It had to be watered 1-2x per day and since I could not water while off island, I had the brillian idea of maintaining humidity (which is a BIG problem for me!) by placing the branch over a tub of water. Long story short(er), it rained and filled the tub while I was gone and found half of the roots had been soaking in the water for (Im guessing) a week!!!! I lost half the roots (of a seedling!!!) but the plant has since recovered and has roots all over the stick. I thought it was a goner for sure!!

I'm sorry your new chid didn't make it through shipping.

I've killed a couple mostly by either over watering or under watering. Basically no roots! BUT I've had some that just commit suicide on their own and a few to scale. I hate those little buggers !!! Mealies already know not to live anywhere near my chids. They get a good shot of alcohol and I don't mean a Bahama Mama

Sorry to hear about your frozen orchid! Similar thing happened to me once. Inlaws went to vacation in Hawaii last January and mailed me an orchid. They were so happy when they found a nursery that delivered plants year round. The delivery guys left it on my doorstep and I didn't see it until I came home from work. There was no heat pad in the box. The flowers had all been crushed and many of the leaves were damaged by the cold. The plant is still alive, but it has never been healthy.

I managed to kill a number of orchids when I transplanted them. I had no idea how to do it, and 5 orchids, all phals died on me! Up until then I'd been doing quite well. BikerDoc and Ethan have given me some good advice, so I'll be trying again!

Well, I have a new one...or rather a new dead one!

With the below freezing temps we recently had, I moved all the Cyms (which usually stay on on the lanai down to the high 30s) into the room...except for one which was not in a movable pot. I had it in a hanging wire rack on the screen room post and couldn't move it. I covered it well and hoped for the best...it didn't work

Today, I checked the plant and every leaf has bad cold damage, you can see that they froze because their texture is different. I never got to see this one bloom...but I really hated the name of it (Cym Little Black Sambo) so I'm not too upset

The last time I bought orchids it was by correspondence. As there is no other way of buying unusual orchids here, I bought them from Belgium. They arrived on 4th December, and they are still all alive. I hope they make it through to the spring!
