cold weather
Hey Lobsterman - I live in south florida (sunrise). I also moved all of my orchids inside on those nights. I have about 75 orchids - 25 vandas, 25 phals and 25 other assorted...in/out that's about what we can expect during January and Feburary. My husband goes nuts. They all go into my garage. If the temp. is going to remain about 55, I just put all into a corner of my pool enclosure (I have an L- shaped house) and cover with sheets. They are usually in my pool enclosure so I have the shelves out there anyway. Under 45 that's pretty tricky. My patio faces south and that helps. My garage is the best I can do. Of course, if temps. are going below 40 I would put a heater into the garage and pray alot. Good luck!! :

Well, I was out of the country for the last 3 weeks, and all the orchids were outside through the cold weather, and it seems that they all are fine. In fact, almost all the phals are spiking, and various other vandaceous are too. I have a little asian ghost orchid that's spiking. Can't wait to see all the blooms. Supposed to be cold(high 30s-low 40s) again tonight and through the rest of the week.

I laughed a bit while reading your post complaining about "freezing cold" a month ago we had -27C during day
Hope you'll survive

Florida is not supposed to be this cold!
At this point, we have passed the part of winter that should've been the coldest...and even that isn't supposed to be 21 degrees!

I have 15 x 20 ft lathe orchid house with covered opaque white polycarbonate roof. 15 foot maximum height. Temps in West Palm Beach near the water reached approx. 36 degrees last night. I have too large a collection to place inside so I covered the walls with clear 4 mil plastic and placed a small electric space heater inside. Temps were maintained at approximately 50 degrees. No sure what temps are going to be tonight but Im going to leave everything in place for a couple of days just to be careful.

It didn't get quite as cold here as "they' were predicting but it's still cold! Right now it's 43 degrees and not expected to get much higher. The heater has been running non-stop in the orchidroom since yesterday. Tonight is another cold one, another freeze watch in effect, but after this it's gonna warm up a bit
I've got my fingers crossed that it's over and done with...enough already!
