Phalaenopsis Question
Default Phalaenopsis Question

As my name suggests I am not so good with plants. have had Phalaenopsis orchids but the longest one has ever lived is about 3 year. i am not sure what i am suspusto be doing when the flowers die off (i know you have to trim the stem, but from where??), watering, trimming, fertalizing etc. if anyone can give me a pointer that would be great. also i have heard you should plant them in moss, then i have heard orchid bark. any one have any answers or any links for like orchids for dummies. real real basic instrucitons with pictures?
thanks!

Hi black thumb, I don't know if you are a regular visitor to the board or not, but you'll find there is no one right way to grow orchids . Some people like moss, others don't. Personally, I never had luck with moss so my phals are happily living in a bark mix. As for cutting the flower stalks, some like to cut it after blooming to give the plant streangth, others leave it because it will probably flower again. Unless my phals look stressed I leave the stalks until they turn brown. I always have new flowers that develop on a stalks that already finished blooming. When it turns brown I cut it just below the point it turned brown if only part of the stem is brown, or as close to the leaves as possible when the whole stem turns brown. As for info with pictures, there is a lot out there on the internet. I like to get supplies from Repotme and they have some good info at Phalaenopsis Care . There is also a lot of info on this board at the Orchid Alliance--Phalaenopsis site. Hope this helps.

You're doing better than me! I kill mine within the first year. LOL. Trying another one now. I can grow all the others just fine though.

Hi black_thumb, like Judi says on the same web page there is a link to instructions on how to repot a phal.

I personally keep mine in a bark/leca mixture with a bed of lightly packed sphag near the top. They seem to appreciate it.

With phals you should try to fertilize them "weekly, weakly" that is a bit of food (1/2 or 1/4 strength) every watering with a good fresh water flush once a month to prevent salt build up.

As far as lighting go, they like indirect sunlight, if exposed to direct light the leaves will burn easily.

Other than that they are truly forgiving plants!

Hope this helps!
