I have been struggling trying to save one of my Dens for a long time and just when i thought it was a goner I saw a bit of a nub on the side of one of the old canes. I'll post pics as soon as its big enough to see with the naked eye lol. I'm just wondering if its possible that its a keiki. I figured its more likely a keiki than a root coming out half way up an old cane. Do Dens ever do this?
Yay I think I saved it. When i 1st got it it was on my moms back porch in the fall (in canada.. so it drops to freezing all the time) out of the sun sharing a pot with another Den and a CACUS... the poor thing was planted in cactus soil... my mom puts the plants shes sick of on the back porch to die over the winter. I saved all 3 of them
Yep I got two keikis from my Den blue foxtail this way. I waited untill they had lots of roots before removing them last spring and now they both have two canes.

I just went home and checked on it. It looks like the little bump you get when new roots 1st break through but are still just nubs and it has a point on the end and its pointing sorta up and out.... its like 2mm long lol. But that little nub is enough to make me very happy cause I DIDNT LET IT DIE... I will be sure to take lots and lots of pictures... this thing is coming back from the dead. Now i have a question about how to care for this NOID keiki... this is my 1st keiki. I currently have the den in s/h with a plastic bag on it to keep the humidity high. I dont wanna fuss with it... i kinda wanna let it do its thing to avoid any more stress.
