New bulb growth
Hello,
I have a question about propagating an oncidium orchid. The new bulb is growing off of the older bulb that grew a spike a couple of months ago. However, the bulb is growing somewhat sideways. The news bulb is has a spike groing out of it, and the spike already has a few small buds coming out.
My question is that is it okay to snap the new bulb off the old bulb and move it so that the plant can grow upwards?
Thanks,
Tank Attack

Don't break off the new growth, it will probably die if you do. Just let it grow, and it will find it's way to where it needs to be.

I forgot to add that the new bulb has it's own roots.

Well, if you want to learn the hard way, then go ahead and break it off.

My general rule-of-thumb is to keep a division to a minimum of two old pseudobulbs and a new growth, preferably larger.
Keep in mind that the energy for the blooming process is coming from the entire "colony" of growths.
The angle of the new growth is influenced to a significant degree by the light source, so unless you have a direct overhead source, you can expect to see such angulation.
The inflorescence may also be similarly affected, but you can stake it as it grows to attain a more vertical presentation.

What Ray said.:iagree:
Everything I've read says to keep divisions with at least two old pseudobulbs and one new one.
