Powdery mildew a risk to my chids?
Default Powdery mildew a risk to my chids?

My grandmother got me a mini rose with beautiful tiny flowers and another lovely surprise... POWDERY MILDEW. I had the rose on a shelf with my chids when i noticed it. I tried spraying with a mixture of peroxide and water and a tiny bit of soap and it seemed to work but soon after i noticed it came back so i got fed up and cut every single leaf off the rose in an attempt to save it (i think it worked and i didnt kill the rose... hardy little fella) but i just saw that my NOID Onc looks like it has a bit on some new growth, i sprayed it with the peroxide, soap, water mixture and I havent seen any come back after a few weeks. Do i need to be overly concerned? I know some plants are really prone to powdery mildew and it can spread quick but i have never seen it on chids. I havent seen any signs of it on my other chids, the Onc was sitting just beside the rose so I think thats why it got hit. Should i be a 1/10 on the worry scale or a 10/10?

Mini roses are just beautiful to have inside.
Its not so much the mildew I would worry about ... its the mites these minis are known to carry.
Keep them away from you're collection of orchids!

I've done away with these small roses inside the house.

Amen to what Gloria has said about the mites. I've not seen powdery mildew on any orchid, but mites are a real grief.

I dont have any critters. I imagine removing every leaf on the rose would do away with the mildew and prob any critters. These mites you talk about, would they be on the plant or in the soil? Like spider mites

Mites would be on the plant - blooms and leaves - in most infestations.
If you have a magnifying glass (or just really good and young eyes ) you should be able to ID a mite infestation.
Other critters can also give one a "powdery" look I believe, like some scales.
These would then be best treated with either an insecticide (if you are into chemicals) or Neem oil if you are not. I prefer the more certain kill with pesticides. Remember, if they are "alive" you kill the adults and will have to retreat for the second generation that will come along a week of so later.
First off, tho, you need to ID what exactly you have so you know what you need to do to cure your chids.

Im 99% sure it powdery mildew that I had on my rose and the Onc was right under the rose. I saw the same powder on the new growth of the Onc so I sprayed and took a Qtip to it. I know its a bugger for roses but I wanted to make sure its not gonna cripple the thick Onc leaves the way it does the rose leaves.

Mix 3 tablespoons cooking oil, 1 tablespoon liquid dishwashing detergent, and 1 tablespoon baking soda in a gallon of water; spray at three-day intervals for powdery mildew.

Thanks Ray. I'm worried about the excess spray getting in the s/h aggregate. If some of it drips down to the roots will it be bad?
