Default I got 4 new orchids for really cheap!

Hello!

I'm so excited. I went to Lowes yesterday (i know you all frown on getting plants from there) but I couldn't help myself!

Apparently the birds that have invaded the store are eating all of the blooms... so they had about 20+ phals with flowers that were all chewed up. So I asked the manager if I could have one or two at a discount. The plants were super healthy, so I figure it would be a good buy. The manager let me have it for $5 each! So I bought 4. Some of them still had remnants of the flower left on them, so I know I'm not getting repeats. I also got some for my friend.

QUESTION: At what point on the spike should I cut it so it can possibly rebloom? The spike is very green considering the blooms were eaten and didn't drop on their own. I would love to get some blooms on these now if I can.

As for my other plants I have several that are going to flower soon! I'm thrilled. I'll post pictures when they do!

Thanks everyone!

Au contraire, little singing lady! I think any of us would purchase plants from a big box store at deep discount prices, if the plant was healthy.... anyway I would! Problem around here is that they let the plants go so long with so little care that they really aren't worth the money, time or effort. As for the spike....many say to cut at the base so the new spikes will produce larger and more numerous flowers. But since you are trying to get flowers this season, you can try to cut just below the the last flower pedicle. This late in the season, you may not get anything and if the spike stays green it will re-spike next year(season).

I bought some from Lowe's in worse shape, for the same price. One of the phal's looked healthy and did not need anything. Some have been for a challenge (have I learned enough here to rehab plants?). For the $5 on some I have gotten a $4 pot and a $1 orhcid, or vice versa. My den was listed around $30 or $36 (don't remember which) but cost me $7. It was hard to turn down. Now it is sending up a new shoot!!! I guess I have learned enough!
