some frequency would also help.... i remember watching discover channel that they are experiencing problems with the bubble pool arena in beijing, since the material they use is some kinda textile which easily cause holes from birds... so what they did is to put some low frequency that can be annoyed by birds.

Mirrors - depends on the bird species.
Guinea hens LOVE looking in mirrors and they are attracted to them - or anything reflective of their images.
Some Robins will attach a mirror thinking it is a competing bird.
I'd stay away from mirrors.....well, except for a say a concave mirror that would focus the sun lights energy on an object at a focal length in front of it. Could give the bird a "hot" reception! (Can you say L-A-S-E-R like??)

I don't know where I heard this from but you could try and put a sticky past that wont dry like Vaseline all along where they are landing they don't like how it feels on there feet or they fall off or something then when they stop coming around you can wash it off. I don't know but someone some where said it works to deter birds.

I'm not sure where you live and what the weather is like, but it could be a territorrial thing where he is with his own immage. We once had a demented robbin that kept pecking at our upstairs window from sunrise to sunset, we couldn't get any sleep and finally had to put cardboard infront of the window so he couldn't see himself! Obviously that isn't an option for you, but is there some way you could keep him from seeing his reflection ? Or maybe distract him with a mirror or other object where he can see his reflection nearby on the ground or somewhere else where it doesen't matter if he makes a mess ? In any case I think he will eventually give up and go away.

Try hanging a couple of silver cd's outside the window. It is a good deterrent for squirrels and it might work for birds. The moving in the wind scares them away.

I like the teddybear idea! If that doesn't work out - try a Clown, I still have childhood nitemares from those

Good luck Peggy

I just read my post and just to be clear I didn't mean that the birds feet fall off I just meant maybe the bird will fall off from where it is perching.

There is a product on the market called "Tree Tanglefoot". It is an organic goop that contains castor bean oil, and if a line is smeared where the birds stand, they won't light there any more.

Additionally, if you smear it around the legs of a plant bench, no slugs or snails will pass it either (that's how I know about it).
