I was recently told by a successful Vanda grower here in south texas that the lower leaves on a Vanda will yellow and drop off at 65 degrees F or less.

Ahhh, that makes sense. So really, misting the Christmas tree adjacent to the Vanda would be the thing to do, if I mist it at all.

Crap, my thermostat is set to 66° in the morning and evening, 60° during the day and night. The Vanda is in a south-west facing window though, which should keep it warm on sunny days right?

Well, I've had bad luck with Vandas at my place in san Antonio. My entire yard is covered in Live Oaks during the summer so good for partial shade loving orchids, but not particularly good for Vandas. I have one sickly-looking Vanda left, I kept this vanda in a SouthEast facing window which is the only one getting substantial sun during the winter. I've started keeping a thermometer/hydrometer in that bay window and found that even though my household thermostat is set for 68 degrees, the window temp goes down into the low sixties on cold mornings. The humidity stays around 30% in the winter, probably not high enough for Vandas either. I just built a light shelf for wintering orchids and will try keeping the Vanda there for the rest of the winter. Sorry I can't be better help.

Vandas need LOTS of sun and LOTS of humidity..... resetting your thermostat to about 80F would be better

Yeah, I am gradually turning my home into a greenhouse as it is.
I try to keep the temp on the cool side to keep from baking the other orchids and current climate conditions here allow me to move orchids outside for short periods at least a couple of days a week.

Hi,
I'm very new to orchids. But I am trying the vanda in a vase technique. (Go to Vanda Alliance on the homepage - then Vanda in Vase)
Vandas in Glass Vases
It helps with the humidity etc apparently. I soak it 15mins a day in the mornings.
I found everyone's comments on there really helpful too, I learnt a lot about vandas from there.
Hope it has helped.
