Personally I'm going to go back to feeding 'weakly, weekly' as I did for this one over the summer and that's what I do with my Phals.

Does that sound right for this sort as well, and when it's actively growing?

Hi Rosie
Great den. I hope that you get some more beautiful blooms on it this year. What part of England are you from? I am down in Kent and we cannot get orchids other than phals here! I tend to buy my others from South East Orchids on Ebay.
Hugs Joan

I'm in the Midlands and it's pretty much the same here.

Almost all garden centers (or supermarkets or anywhere else that sells orchids) have phals and nothing else. My local garden center (Dobbies which is a national chain but mostly in the North and a few down as far as us) has a few others but all of them are completly NOIDs.

I picked this up there, and until someone on OB told me it looks like a Dendrobium Phalenopsis hybrid I had no idea what type of Dendrobium it was. They had some other non-phals labeled as Orchidee (French for Orchid) but still being a newbie I have no idea what.

It seems only phals are easily available here in the UK. I am wanting to try a Paph next but I think my only choice is to find one online.

Most of the Garden centers here have phals too and Onc. "Carnival Costumes". Soon the Nun's orchids will be out though! And cyms!

Default Sourcing other orchids

Hi Rosie

May I suggest that you try Lidl supermarkets? You have to keep checking but every so often they have really reasonably priced NOIDs including Dendrobiums of the phal type, in November they had Cymbidiums and in December they had some Cambria types, Zygopetalums and I swear that the Odontoglossum was the same as the "Anna Claire" I got from an Italian nursery.

I know its nice to have names, but in the end its also good to give a supermarket pot plant a home where it won't be consigned to the bin when all the flowers are finished.

Also do you have a Stephen H Smith garden Centre near you - I got two NOID paphs from them, I had the first one as a gift when in flower then went back and got the second when the flowers had dropped and it was half price!

Happy growing - your plant is beautiful

Thanks Heather,

We don't have a Stepehn H Smith grarden center, there are three near me but done of them are that.

I've never thought of looking in Lidl, not the sort of place I would think to look for plants, but we have one near here so I will keep and eye out.

I agree that while I like to have names, if I like the plant then it does not matter if it is a NOID. All my orchids are currently NOID and while I would love to have names for them I would still buy other NOIDs if I liked the plant.

Thanks for the tips
