Question Orchid Encyclopedia

I know that there ate goof orchid encyclopedias out there but I was wondering if someone ever thought to put one online?
I was also wondering if OB members would be willing to help me help the online Orchid Wiki to make it more comprehensive and help people who just want a little bit of free info?

The problem with Wiki is that the info is posted by folks who don't necessarily know what they're talking about...there is no way to know if something they suggest is correct.

It's better to post any orchid questions you have here on OB...at least you will get suggestions from folks who know what they're doing and from many different environments. There can be no one exact way to do anything when it comes to growing orchids.

I agree with Sue. Wikie isn't my first choice due to the ability for anyone to post anything they wish, with no peer review. There often is useful info, so I am not willing to discount the site entirely, but take the posts with the grain of salt necessary due to the source of the info.

Even here on OB, we sometimes get into tizzies about how to do things because, as Sue says, we all have different conditions. Best way to handle culture is be very aware of the poster's growing conditions, be aware that lots of things are different between "down south" and "up north" and learn to adapt to the differences. I always try to temper my advice to the poster's climate (if I know it.) That's why I try to emphasize posting your location so we can accurately help. Just saying "Florida" isn't enough, because there are differences between southern Fla (like Miami) and northern Florida (Like Talahasee.) This isn't meant as a post to squelch your idea, but to get you thinking about the complexities of doing as you suggest. Trust me, you aren't the first one to try this same idea.

The Orchids Wiki concept is a great one. The problem is that the current person working on the project isn't citing his/her sources.

Here's the entry I created on there... Coelogyne nitida - Orchids Wiki

When the sources are listed, it's pretty easy to check if something is accurate. And if you find some information that is inaccurate, its fairly easy to make the correction yourself.
