If yours looks like the first pic you posted, all those squiggly things are roots...which is good, good, good!!!

It does look like the first plant but the roots are pointing straight up. I have it positioned by my aquarium so that it gets 12 hours of light a day. That's comming from 48 watts of compact flourecent lighting. If that makes any difference.
