Clay pots decorated

I really get board with the red/brown clay pots. If I were to paint them would it hurt the orchid? I could still keep them in the plastic pot like a liner.. or I could paint and clear coat it all so roots wouldn't attach. BTW, I would use a spray can paint.. i.e. rustolium or such for multi-use projects.

Speaking of which, why is it that the plastic pots (I save from/for transplanting) hardly ever fit the clay pots like they should when you buy an orchid..

as long as you keep em in the plastic pot and use the painted clay pot as a cache pot i think its fine to paint em....the problem comes when you actually plant in a clay pot then seal it with paint...the clay loses its porosity and the plant suffers....so paint on, but keep your plants in the plastic pot.

I've tried it with some of my clay, and no problems on my end!! And I use no liner pots! I used to, but I love them grabbing the clay. As I have all my chids in Lava rocks, and maybe a tiny bit of spahg in some seedlings.
And they still grabbed the painted pots!

Thanks for ya'lls input. I will start painting and decorating away!

I now keep liners in my pots after I went to repot a plant and it was an all day project soaking/gently prying -- trying not to break roots. Not always do I replant as soon as I bring home a new baby and sometimes I'm mad at myself when they are potted bare in a clay pot and I have to go thru the soaking/prying dance.
