Hey camille.. I think that I was the friend you were helping!
I haven't been on the forum since then but I have a few of your private messages saved. You tried to find me some nursery in Europe that sells them.

Thanks for refreshing my memory, I did help you! Too bad you're still out of luck getting one... But before that I helped a friend on a french orchid forum, from the same city as me. She tried to persuade another french person from that forum to self her ghost in the hopes of getting some seeds to sell to people. No luck, the person didn't want to, they wanted to enjoy the blooms as long as possible. (which is understandable)

If you really want to know about teh ghost orchid and the circumstances around the guy who tried to steal it from the swamps here in southwest Florida, read " The Orchid Thief" by Susan Orlean. The movie is very...and I mean VERY...loosely based on the book. The book is non-fiction, whereas the movie is just about all fiction. I actually never made the connection between the book and the movie until I went to one of the swamp headquarters and saw the photo of the ghost on the wall there. When I asked if that was the same orchid as in the movie, I was provided with that connection.
It was in reading this book that I was able to learn a whole lot about orchid collecting history and also about many of the growers and hybridizers that I've since gotten to know personally. If you cherish orchids like I do, you'll love this read. ...and I rarely go for non-fiction books!

So they are rare even in a farmed environment?
I'd love to just be able to see one in the wild. People are aloud to Hunt to just to see them or photograph them? Are there guides in Florida who take people to do this?
Just a few questions
thanks

Hi Swamprat,
Here's a link to the website for the Fakahatchee State Preserve, where they do take folks out on guided tours. TThe phone number is on the web page:
Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park
I'm actually going out there on my own next week for a scenery photo trip...I'm not planning on swamp hiking, just checking out the wildlife and scenery down along Jane’s Scenic Drive.
Good Luck!

Due to the miracles of plant tissue culture, they are not that rare. I've seen them in bloom in a couple places, most recently I saw Fred Clarke had one in his greenhouse.
Welcome to the world of orchids Swamprat. There are many cool orchids out there, beyond the ghost orchid.
I would check out some of these
Catsetinae from Sunset Valley
There are literally tons of really unique orchids, from Peristeria elata to Draculas, Pleuothallids, Bulbophyllums, Coryanthes, etc.
Please don't limit yourself to just being fascinated by the ghost.
