If the hostess has a south or east-facing window an Oncidium hybrid could be a good gift. The yellow and brown flowers would go well with Autumn decorations.

I think Ross made a good point. Is the hostess a plant person? For me there is no point spending tons of money on a plant that is ultimately headed for the trash. But if this is a plant person, I would say to get a paph or oncidium. They are easy and a change from the typical phal.

My goodness, so many responses. This is an incredibly active forum! (Usually I'm active in graphic art forums, far far far less active.)

So much knowledge and generous suggestions, here.

Thank you to everyone who responded, and thanks for the welcome.

Sadly I think Ross is right.

I went to my local florist (high end, larger) and Bristol Farms (2Fer1 sale) and both had the Phals to offer.

I purchased a couple of lovely yellow Phals.

Anyone interested, please watch this thread as I'm going to make a computer wallpaper after taking pictures of them, will pass it along as a thank you to you all for your generous responses.

Wickedone if you are going to give a card with your gift you could always put the web address of this forum on there and maybe they will come to us for help if they should need it. Just a suggestion.

If you have a convenient orchid greenhouse, you may pick out your choice for a gift personally. If your hostess is interested in keeping orchids, I would suggest 2-4 pots of phalenopsis type dendrobium with double spikes each placed in a single large basket. If your hostess is not interested in keeping live plants, a cut flower arrangement with her favorite colors would make a better impression!

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughtful replies. This didn't turn out very fancy except for the beautiful orchids which, as you all know, don't require any fancy bells and whistles to make them beautiful.
