ROOTS & LEAVES GROWING FROM TOP OF SHOOT
Question ROOTS & LEAVES GROWING FROM TOP OF SHOOT

Hello I am a new user of this Board and hope that I am asking my question in the proper manner.

I just became infatuated with orchids and am starting to learn about them and their care. My first plant had beautiful purple flowers from 2 shoots for several months. Now it has begun to put out new roots and leaves from the top of its shoot. Is this normal? What do I do with the plant now? Do I cut and re-pot the new plant at the top? Two photos are attached to show what I am describing. (I hope they are attached)

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

after the flowers die, its normal for phalaenopsis to produce keikis (young shoot) yeah you can cut the flower stem for about an inch below the keiki. You can pot the young one, careful with the roots.

Your plant produced a keiki, which is the hawaiian word for baby. It looks like it has quite a bit of roots on it, so you can cut it off and pot it up. Cut the spike(shoot) about an inch below the keiki, and if you want, you can seal the cut with a bit of cinammon. Pot it up in orchid mix, and voila, you have a new orchid!

Hi, what is the purpose of sealing the cut with cinammon?

That will keep out bacteria from the cut and thus prevent anything from entering it.
