Greetings and a question
Default Greetings and a question

Hello. I'm a new grower of orchids from Central MA. I have three orchids that I bought from Home Depot. One is growing in a bark medium and the other two are in sphagnum moss.
*They have been great bloomers over the last three years, but the roots are growing out of the top sides of the containers.
*New flower shoots are emerging on two now.
*They are in the original plastic containers within a clay pot.
*I feed regularly with Schultz orchid food

My question is - can I repot now using the clay pots with holes in the side, or should I wait? Also, what kind of plant is this?

Welcome to Orchidboard and to answer your question that is a Phalaenopsis, a hybrid most likely. Are the other two the same type? If they have been in moss for 3 years I would probably repot. Most say to wait till blooming is over but I've repotted phals in bloom out of bloom, in spike and everything in between and have never noticed any change or difference in growth, blooming, or bud blasting. So I would say go ahead and repot. Cut off any blackened soft roots and dust with some fungicide or cinnamon then put new media in the pot. If you have been having good results with moss I would just put new moss back in. I always say if it's not broke don't fix it, and what works for one may not work for another. Unless you have mondo overgrowth of roots then I would put back in the pot it came in, most orchids like to be underpotted and you have much less chance of overwatering. If you feel you need to use a bigger pot to get the roots in just go up 1" or so. Happy growing!!
