Dendrobium Hybrid Help
Default Dendrobium Hybrid Help

Hi. I am a newbie both to the board and to orchid care!

I have a Dendrobium Hybrid that I purchased about two months ago. After about two weeks of beautiful blooms, the flower petals began falling off. Now they're all gone and all that is left are two long twigs (see pics attached).

The only care I have provided is regular watering, approx twice a week and sunlight. I read somewhere that overhead light is best for this type of plant, so I've moved it to nook that has a 50 watt bulb. I have neither fertilized nor repotted.

So I'm wondering: are the stems supposed to look like that? Should I cut them off? How should I care for this plant going forward? Any suggestions are welcome!

you can remove the flower stem by cutting them be careful not to harm the stem. Your dendro looks healthy to me, the leaf color (light green) indicates their getting enough light, Dendros enjoy alot of sun, my dendros can tolerate full sun around 4-5 hours in a day. well old canes are hard to train and making them grow straight is risky you might damage the roots or break the hard canes. Next time try tying tie them when their canes are still young- then you'll have a pretty well growing dendros. Btw. can you take a picture of your roots with the medium, as well as your leaves- im pretty bothered with the yellowing of your leaves. im guessing its because of your light fixture reflected on your plant / your dendro is sick. Once a week of orchid fertilizer.
Tip: if the intruction tells you to add 1-2 Tbsp of fert in a gallon of water- use 1-1.5 Tbsp. to avoid over fertilizing. and be sure you do it a regular habit. Happy blooming.
