POTS, with holes or without? Female
Default

Hi there. I live in S. Florida and it's very humid here. I place my phals in plastic pots with slits and holes in them. I then place them inside a ceramic pot for easy removal--and so that they don't stick to the pot.

My mix (from another member of the board-don't want to take credit) is 1/2 coir and 1/2 monterrey bark. It's worked wonders on my phals. It dries quickly but retains moisture for enough time. My phals have been doing so much better since using this mix.

Hope it helps and good luck with your plants. I know it's an addiction!!

Thank you so much for the info. That's an alternative for my next re-potting of phals. I intend to get some more young phals.

Yup, but seeing the phals at the florists, most are kept in a clear plastic container with one hole at its base to allow water to flow but there aren't any holes or slits around its side, but yet the phals are blooming happily.

As I've said before all of mine are in clear pots with like 3-4 holes in bottom. That's to let the liquid out. Not to let air in. That's what the coarse bark is for. I've not lost a single Phal to rot yet - lost a bunch to hail, but that's another story Clear pots allow you to withhold watering till the mix is getting dry. Thus, there isn't really a need for slots, etc.

I use Terra Cotta pots that I use a drill and dremel tool to make slits on the sides and bottom. The reason is with strong winds even in my shade house the plants do not blow over. As far as a mediun go's I use coconut husk chips, sponge rock and black cinder and the plants love it. I have 2 catts that I had not repotted in this mixture that had root rot because the grower/Box store packed sphag around the roots then used a bark mix to fill the pot not the way to go, the bark looked dry but the sphag was wet. Your mix sounds good except I would leave the sphag out next time.

I tried a pot that used LECA and charcoal only... not sure whether the phals like it or not.
