Hello newphallover, well for the brief description given, I a m afraid you are dealing with crown rot, which is for phals, well very bad. however, there is a slight chance of bringing them back, please check the link below.

Example of Stem rot or Crown rot in Phalaenopsis

Now, the above is the best case scenario. You can give it a try, but don't worry, most of us started with a beloved phal that was overwatered to death, it happens to the best of us.

Either way, I hope it recover and I look forward to see the pics just to be sure.
