A set of random Qs :)
Default A set of random Qs :)

Hello!
After finally getting my stuff together I've now decided to fire my first burst of Qs towards you

Hm, the first question has to do with my Cambria. I was just wondering if anyone knew more precisly what kind of cambria I've bought. Would be fun to know

The other pictures are just for "show".. I don't really have any orchid fans around me in real life so I get to... boost here at the forum So i've been sweeping around at the forum the last couple of days, and naturally alot of questions has come to mind... So here are a couple of q's I've been able to extract from my confused head!

And regarding the third picture, since I am utterly new to all this, I was just wondering, when marks like those appear on chids, what could be the cause of it? The thing is, when I bought it it didn't really look to healthy. At first I thought it had got some sort of lice on it, but taking a closer look the second day I couldnt spot 'em again, so I guess I was just being paranoid. Anyhow, could those marks simply be because of sunburn or something like that? And this might actually be my most stupid question, but the thingy is that I found one centipede when I quite thoroughly looked through the medium. Should I be throwing myself over the plant and repot it by now?

Since the conditions aren't that great growing orchids in my apartment, I've begun scheming (spelling?) on my own orchidarium! I am taking it over my head atm, I know, but gotta make plans for the future.. It's quite frustrating, since it's a cellar-apartment (though the windows are surprisingly large considering that) that the windowsills aren't too spacy..

Orchidarium-related questions! When it comes to mounting, are there any materials preferably used, or can you for example just take like any kind of drifting wood, clean it properly and use it? Cause when you mount your plants on that, do you mount it with some spaghnum or epiweb or something, or just straight on the wood?

And when it comes to watering, does the high humidity take care of the most, or is spraying/pouring water onto it the solution? And then there's the fertilizing! How does that work when the plants are mounted/in an orchidarium? I guess you can't just spray one plant with it w/o it affecting others?

And having a waterfall/waterstream inside, would that be do-able? Like having a miniature-pond with a waterfall pouring into it? And here comes probably the dumbest of them all... If you say you have like a standard Phall in there, at the bottom, how should that one be planted? Is one way to simply plant it in the soil, or should it be planted with a pot for I dunno, making it easier with something? I'm just too confused right now so any answers are highly appreciated And when you've enlighted me with the answers of these q's, i'll come up with more..! sorry

with the answers, I'm a mess!

Ross, WHERE ARE YOU?

I don't think you're being paraniod and if you found a centipede in your plants medium then yes, you need to repot it.

Now, on to the orchidarium/vivarium questions:

I have an 80 gallon vivarium that we have been working on for a few months now - I have 19 plants in there and one of them is a phal...doesn't seem to be unhappy as a matter of fact, it's put up several new leaves over the past few months...the waterfall that we installed in our tank was easier than we thought it would be...we used a canister filter and just have the intake dumping over several rocks and since the tank was originally drilled as a reef tank, it worked out really well...here's a link to a thread I posted about my tank....I don't have an automatic mister in it anymore, I could regulate it so I went back to misting by hand...not a big deal for me though oneo f these days I will be getting a better system from our King, Marty

Update for 80 gallon vivarium

There are several great tanks and systems set up by some of our members, check out Terrarium Gardening http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ium-gardening/ or pop over to our sister forum http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ium-forum.html

Keep your questions coming and

Hard to say for sure on the specific hybrid. maybe someone else wil recognize it.

By the way, over in Europe, "cambria" has become a common name for any of a wide array of oncidiinae intergeneric hybrids. The name is based upon a really popular plant from many moons ago, Vuylstekeara Cambria, especially the culivar 'Plush':

Your first three pictures show an Odontonia Samurai,a fairly recent, and already very popular European Hybrid....mine grows like a weed but seems to be reluctant to flower. It currently has four growths, reaching maturity ,so l'll just have to wait and see what happens next !!
